Digestion Begins In The Mouth

Amylase is the enzyme that digeststs carbohydrates, and over half of your body's amylase is in your mouth. So taking time to slow down and chew your food well not only coats your food with more amylase, but it breaks your food down better. This will take some of the burden off of the rest of your digestive system.
Another thing to consider is that when your body is under stress, sympathetic dominance suppresses digestion. So avoiding stressful situations while you eat (turning off the news, giving yourself enough time to eat at a slow, relaxed pace...) will help support better digestion.
And as Hypocrates said, "All disease begins in the gut." Being intentional about how you eat is important for your overall health.
